The popularity of comic books has become stronger with waves of superhero movies. Some of them came from Warner Bros. Studios and DC. This year, fans are not only anticipating for the screening of Wonder Woman and Justice League, but also for Injustice 2.
Developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Injustice 2 is the direct sequel of DC Comics’s widely acclaimed Injustice: Gods Among Us. NetherRealm Studios, previously named Midway, is critically recognized in the game industry for their Mortal Kombat franchise. Its series co-creator and creative director Ed Boom has been directly involved with the development of the game series.
Set after the events of Injustice: Gods Among Us, the power-hungry and insane High Council Superman was finally defeated. After he was imprisoned and depowered, Batman plans to reestablish order while facing the remnants of Superman’s One Earth Regime who wishes to regain control. Meanwhile, Gorilla Grodd forms The Society, a team of supervillains bent on world domination and destroying any opposition. Along with Brainiac’s impending invasion, Batman is forced to form a new team that will face the new threats.
Fans can expect the return of heroes and villains like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Catwoman and Joker. New comers in this game include Supergirl, Blue Beetle, Damian Wayne, Gorilla Grodd, Darkseid and Brainiac. A total of 28 characters (16 of them are new characters and 12 of them came from the first game) and 9 downloadable content characters are expected from this game. More additional characters from the roster will be unveiled soon.
For those who are familiar with Injustice: Gods Among Us, certain game mechanics are retained in this game. These mechanics include two life bars, four button layouts (light attack, medium attack, heavy attack, character trait), interactive stage elements, transitioning stages, character classes (Power Users and Gadget Users), super meters for enhanced special attacks, counterattacks and strongest special attacks, and Wager system. According to IGN, developers introduced new gameplay features like evasive roll, aerial recovery, wake-up moves, and blockable environmental attacks.
What makes Injustice 2 new is the implementation of Gear System, an RPG-like element. According to NetherRealm Studio’s preview event, every time players win or complete a single-player mode, they can instantly collect gear pieces. Accordingly, this allows players to customize their favorite characters’ cosmetic appearance, as well as improve their stats. Every character has base stats (strength, defense, health, ability) and gears can further improve them. In addition, players begin with 5 basic gear pieces (head, arms, torso, legs, and character-specific equipment). A complete gear set affects some special moves. This new system not only rewards players who invested their time with this game but also encourage them to develop their play style.
Gear stats and bonuses are disabled in online matches so that novices will not be too overwhelmed by veterans who have gathered their ideal gear set. The stats of low-leveled players’ characters may also be adjusted in order to equal higher-leveled characters.
Warner Bros.’s Injustice official forums reveal a new microtransaction system called “Source Crystals.” It is obtainable by spending real-time cash. If one character reaches Level 20, players can spend Source Crystals to increase another character’s level. Players can also change a gear’s appearance with the Transform Gear. This new feature requires Source Crystals and a piece of gear will have cosmetic changes depending on the player’s preferences. Players can also purchase Mother Boxes, which is Injustice 2’s version of loot boxes. The contents include special gears, exclusive skins, shaders, and color schemes. NetherRealm Studios confirmed that their game is not pay-to-win and the microtransaction system will not affect the game’s balance.
Players can also discover new challenges with the Multiverse mode. In an article by Game Revolution on March 2, 2017, this mode functions like the Towers from NetherRealm Studio’s Mortal Kombat X. Multiverse Mode lets players explore parallel worlds based on DC Universe and challenge alternate versions of characters while dealing with handicaps, winning conditions, and goals. Players are generously rewarded with Mother Boxes upon completing the Multiverse Mode.
To further add up to the hype, DC Comics also published Injustice 2 # 1, a comic issue concerning the events following Injustice: Gods Among Us and Injustice 2. NetherRealm Studios will also release Injustice 2, a free-to-play game for the Android and iOS devices.
Injustice 2 was released a month ago for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. According to Gamestop, there would be an Injustice 2 Ultimate and Deluxe Edition where they are bundled with downloadable characters and gears. Don’t miss the hype train and pre-order today!
