We are aware that war never changes and such is a horrifying experience in human history. Despite its despicable and sensitive subject, we still need to be constantly reminded of our past in order to avoid committing the same mistakes. And Call of Duty World War 2 promises to make the new generation of gamers treat World War 2 with much attention and respect.
Call of Duty World War 2 is being developed by Raven Software and Sledgehammer Games. It’s going to be published by Activision. Along with Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games was recognized for their involvement with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Activision has not only set the Call of Duty series in key historical moments but also in modern and futuristic scenarios.
Unlike Battlefield 1 where players faced the horrors of World War 1, Activision Blizzard, Inc. CEO Eric Hirshberg confirmed to gaming website Polygon that they decided to go back to their roots in an epic way. He envisions the return of their franchise in a gritty and cinematic immersion where players will be compelled by the grand scale of the war. At the same time, players will be inspired by the heroism and brotherhood of the soldiers who fought for freedom at the darkest hours of history.
According to Activision Blizzard, Inc.’s Investor Relations page, the plot is based on the experience of the famous 1st Infantry Division of the United States of America wherein players will be able to participate in missions based on the most important battles in the European theatre, including D-Day in Normandy and Battle of the Bugle in Germany.
Another gaming website famously known as Games Radar revealed from their interview with Sledgehammer co-founder Michael Condrey that the game will feature a diverse cast of soldiers. Players take the primary role of 1st Infantry Division’s Private Ronald “Red” Daniels and his closest friend Private First Class Robert Zussman. Other than the American soldiers, Condrey said that players can also take on the role of French Resistance leader Rousseau, British officer Major Edgar Crowley, African-American Officer Cormack, a German family, two sisters, and even a non-Axis German soldier. The reason behind the casting is to further emphasize the global cause of World War 2.
A demo from Call of Duty World War 2 revealed a significant change in the gameplay, which includes the removal of health regeneration, forcing players to depend on health packs. And instead of focusing on a single “super soldier,” players have to depend on their squadron. Every member of the squad has crucial roles. There will be instances where players will be separated from their squad members, causing for changes in tactics. And losing any of the squad members will surely be devastating for the players.
Games Radar also reported that players can anticipate the return of classic World War 2 weapons like SMG-44, Garand, Thompson, rifles, Grease Gun, shotguns and more.
After clearing the campaign mode, players will also enjoy one of its most beloved content: multiplayer mode. The new War mode on the multiplayer mode will divide players into Allies and Axis and they are pivoted into series of scenarios. They are given different objectives to fulfill, ranging from pushing the enemies to defending an important landmark. This mode reflects the actual events in World War 2 but provides different perspectives as it focuses more on a squad-based gameplay.
Activision also included a mode called Divisions where players may create their own character and enlist in a division of their choice while rising from the ranks. The current divisions available are Infantry and Armored.
Players can also socialize with other players’ avatars through the Headquarters. For those familiar with Destiny’s Tower, Headquarters will serve as the hub for players where they can interact with each other and brag their recent medals and achievements.
Originally included as an Easter egg, fans have been speculating that Call of Duty: World at War’s Zombie mode will return in Call of Duty World War 2. Some even believe that players will be facing again the infamous Nazi zombies while developers hinted about the return of the terrifying enemies.
Call of Duty World War 2 will be released on November 3, 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC through Steam. You can pre-order now for the “Private Beta” and take part of humanity’s defining moment in history.
