The Z270 Extreme4 Motherboard is part of ASRock’s latest Extreme lineup in the LGA 1151 series. ASRock has been recognized as one of the major producers of motherboards since 2002. Balancing money and innovation, this motherboard is ideal for the 7th and 6th Generation Intel® Core™ processors, including the latest Kaby Lake series. This is also ideal for content makers like video editors, 3D designers, gamers, and digital artists.

At first glance, this motherboard looks impressive upon its installation on a desktop. It has a sleek, metallic black casing, matte black parts, steel PCI slots and an “X” pattern imprinted in silver that intersects across the entire board.

Built on an ATX form factor with 10 Power Phase design for overclocking fans, the ASRock Z270 Extreme4 offers an efficient file storage with its Intel® Z270 chipset. The motherboard has 8 SATA3 connectors compared to other high-end motherboards. This includes 6x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s connectors with RAID mode and 2x SATA3 6.0Gb/s connectors for additional hard drives.

The ASRock Z270 Extreme4 allows for a memory expansion by means of additional DIMMs on its 4x DDR4 DIMM slots with 15μ gold contacts, which is capable of supporting up to 64Gb, non-ECC, unbuffered, system memory at 3866MHz frequency.

Speaking of graphical capabilities, this motherboard initially comes with Intel® HD Graphics Built-In Visuals. Looking forward into the future of VR technology, this ASRock board is made to be VR-Ready. Users can hook up to three monitors on this motherboard through its three graphics output: HDMI with 4K x 2K resolution @ 24/30 Hz, DVI-D with 1920 x 1220 resolution @ 60 Hz and D-Sub with 1920 x 1220 resolution @ 60 Hz.

The ASRock Z270 Extreme4 offers graphical enhancements, thanks to the several expansions on its 3 PCI-E 3.0 x16 slots and 3 x PCI-E 3.0 x1 slots. The PCI-E steel slots accommodate larger and heavier graphics cards without the risk of getting damaged. Other expansion slots include one M.2 Socket (Key E) for type 2230 WiFi/BT module at the top, two M.2 Socket on the board for SSDs and 15μ gold contacts in the VGA PCI-E slot. The motherboard’s expansion slots support technologies like NVIDIA® Quad SLI™ and SLI™, AMD Quad CrossFireX™, 3-Way CrossFireX™ and CrossFireX™ that enable proper splitting from one x16 slot to two x8 slots.

Other than its high-potential graphical capability, the ASRock Z270 Extreme4 also boasts impressive audio capabilities. Its Purity Sound4 is comprised of several audio software and hardware, 120dB SNR

DAC, 7.1 CH HD Audio with Realtek ALC1220 audio codec, individual PCB layers for R/L Audio Channel, TI® Ne5532 Premium Headset Amplifier, Impedance Sensing and more.

For other connections, the motherboard has 4 USB 3.0 ports in the front and another 4 USB 3.0 ports in the rear side, a pair of Type-A and Type-C USB 3.1 at the rear i/o port with 10 Gbps transfer speeds, 3 USB 2.0 headers at the bottom for liquid coolers and 2 USB 3.0 headers at the side for other USB devices. Connecting seamlessly to any network is processed by the motherboard’s Intel® Gigabit LAN 10/100/1000 Mb/s and Giga PHY Intel® I219V.

When it comes to cooling and ventilation, the motherboard has an integrated heatsink at the top portion for efficient cooling. Built with 5 fan chassis and onboard CPU headers, users can conveniently add water coolers and fans on this ASRock board.

The motherboard also highlights its AURA RGB LED lighting standard where users can connect LED lighting on its AURA RGB LED Header. Lighting customization is accessed through its UEFI bios or by opening it on Windows®. The LED strips can be purchased separately.

For this product review, we tested the ASRock Z270 Extreme4 via PassMark Performance Test. The board got a PassMark Rating of 4149, competent enough to handle high-end graphics at a reasonable price.

The board may reach certain limitations when it comes to processing 4K graphics. But once it gets upgrades like additional DDR4 SDRAMs and enhanced overclocking, the money you’ll spend on this will surely be worth it.
