On May 30, 2017, Neople released a major update for the global version of Dungeon Fighter Online. Neople decided to catch up with the main Korean version that has been always 6 months ahead.
Dungeon Fighter Online, or simply abbreviated as DFO, is an online RPG made by Neople. The game incorporates elements of RPG in the form of beat-em-up. The first English version in 2009 was handled by Nexon North America but it was shut down in 2013 due to mismanagement. Neople decided to provide the service themselves by relaunching DFO’s global version in 2015.
The gameplay is reminiscent of games like Golden Axe, Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, Dungeons and Dragons: Shadow over Mystara and Dragon’s Crown. Players traverse in a 2D sprite world where they clear dungeons by defeating waves of monsters and proceed to next rooms. They can move in 8 directions, jump and use normal and special attacks. Using spells are either done by assigning hotkeys of doing button inputs similar to Street Fighter II. Skills that are manually inputted consumes less MP and has a lower cooldown. At the end of the stage, they will face bosses.
Players follow the game’s storyline through Epic Quest. Dungeons are arranged progressively and players can track back after clearing Epic Quests lines and leveling up. The story began when the universe’s creator Carloso divided himself into fragments. A long time passed and the Terra civilization created 12 demigods called The Apostles. Made from Carloso’s fragments, the Apostles claimed every part of Pandemonium, waged war against Carloso and wrecking Terra in the process. After losing, Carloso reclaimed some of his fragments in a planet called Arad, causing the devastating Great Metastasis. Another incident caused some Apostles to be warped in Arad, causing chains of catastrophic events. Above Arad is the Middle Ocean and an industrial continent called Empyrean. Empyrean is currently facing a civil war. In the midst of chaos, an inverted complex called Castle of the Dead appeared between Terra and Empyrean.
Players start after the events of Great Metastatis. Each class has their strengths and perks, as well as own backstory and motives to become an adventurer. Upon leveling up, players can access their classes’ subclass that features unique gameplay.
Other than doing dungeon runs, players can call for party, play daily tower challenges, form guilds, access Guild Dungeons, help newbies via Mentorship and compete in PVP Arena. Players spend money on DFO not only for contract buffs, pets, inventory upgrades and open lottery-based Lost Treasures, but also for in-game cosmetics called Avatars. Every 2 months, DFO release new avatar packages.
The game encourages players to farm end-game gears through harder and gimmick-field dungeons called Otherverse and Ancient Dungeons, Hell Mode and Raids.
In previous versions, Otherverse has a system called Exorcism Parameter, a special stat that affects character stats. The harder the dungeon, the higher Exorcism Parameter is required. If players have lower Exorcism Parameter, they get penalized by having decreased stats. Players can gain Exorcism Parameter by farming Chronicle sets of their class. Chronicle sets modify some spells and improve passive skills.
Ancient Dungeons are harder than Otherverse dungeons, so players are obliged to acquire Chronicle sets first. Players can also farm Quest Legendary gears and craft Liberation Weapons.
Hell Mode requires Hell Party Tickets and upon accessing it, players fight waves of stronger enemies. In exchange, players are rewarded with end-game Epic gears. Farming Epic gears for specific classes could take months due to the random number generator nature of the game.
Raids are DFO’s end-game content where 20 players have to coordinate in separate parties and clear dungeons simultaneously within the time limit. Currently, the available raids are Anton Raid for level 85 players and Luke Raid for level 90 players. Players are given exclusive rewards upon completion.
Every 2 weeks, DFO updates with limited events and rewards to entice new players.
Infinite Equilibrium, the current game update, made several changes in DFO. They introduced Infinity Difficulty where players can increase the difficulty of Otherverse and Ancient Dungeons. Other than modifying the two dungeons, most equipment has Exorcism Parameters so players can conveniently access them. Farming end-game gears were made more convenient and shorter. In-game shops had been revamped and some items were no longer purchasable. The occurring Guild Hideout War was also discontinued. Class rebalances was also implemented where some classes gained new skills and buffs. The in-game user interface also received improvements. Other than the game update, Neople also released avatar sales that were previously exclusive to Korea and China in 2016.
At the end of their official website’s page, Neople gave a teaser for the upcoming Female Priest class on June 30, 2017. An unplayable AI version of the Female Priest is available at the PVP quest mode.
