There are several films, animated features and video games that have depicted Middle Eastern culture as mystical, exotic and enticing. Mirage: Arcane Warfare is a multiplayer, first-person shooter that lets players recognize the beauty of Middle Eastern culture.
This game is developed by Torn Banner Studios, the same team who created Chivalry: Medieval Warfare and Chivalry: Deadliest Warrior. Torn Banner Studios is a Canadian independent company driven by their community’s support and passion for developing games that fans really wanted to play.
According to the game’s official website, Mirage: Arcane Warfare takes place in a peaceful fantasy world plunged into a civil war.
The backstory began when an ancient nation of Nankur was destroyed by a cataclysmic event called Dinahn Genesis. Nankur was once a kingdom built near Mount Nankur and Naban river. They believed that the water flowing out from Mount Nankur to Naban river came straight from the Four Heavens. The kingdom also worshiped four elements: Aether, Sulfur, Salt and Mercury. Due to the kingdom’s location, encountering spirits called The Dim were apparent but the denizens feared them. The Dim were actually ethereal beings called Jinnaye who inhabited a different plane of existence called the Sha’ilum. The catastrophe was caused by the first Nankur Alchemist named Dinah. She used a ritual to retrieve her fallen lover Keer, a Nankur Warlord slain by his rival. She was conjuring Sha’ilum, hoping to see Keer again. Her alchemical ritual caused the collision between the Sha’ilum realm and the mortal plane.
During the eve of destruction, mists from the Aether Sea crawled, stones from the Nankur Mountain floated and Marinstones fell from the heavens. The shards of Marinstones contained the spirits of the Jinn. 800 years passed and the city-state of Bashrahn was established from the ruins of Nankur. The new kingdom harnessed the Marinstones and rose to power.
The current civil war is rooted on controlling Marinstones and philosophical arguments on how magic should be used. Armed with steel weaponry and magic, two factions will wager in a war to find out which one will reign supreme and stand righteous.
The game comes with 6 different classes that suit every playstyle. Entropist is the magical class that provides offensive and supportive skills for their team. He can maneuver on air with his magic carpet. Vigilists is the defensive class that controls the battlefield with her massive shields and knockout skills. Vypress is the assassin class that cuts down enemies with her sharp blades and agility. Taurant is the tank class that overwhelms his enemies with sheer strength, spiked boulders and heavy melee attacks. Alchemancer is the offensive magical class that delivers explosive ranged attacks while flying with his wings. Tinker is the specialist class that utilizes traps and her cunning skills.
There are two opposing factions that players can join, the Azar and the Bashrahn. The Azar Cabal are rebel outcasts that fully embraces the spiritual gifts of the Jinn. Living in the desert outskirts, the overzealous faction immerged to oppose the Bashrahn for treating magic as a tool. The Bashrahni Emirate believes that magic should be regulated by utilizing it solely for gaining power and flourishing their industry. Living in extravagant palaces and populous markets, they fear that excessive use of powers from the Jinn can corrupt any individual.
Unlike other medieval combat games like Ubisoft’s For Honor, Mirage: Arcane Warfare incorporates magic. Combat expands from close quarter duels to magical ranged combat. Physical and magical attacks can be blocked. The variety in combat allows creative display of skills and limitless formation of in-depth strategy. This makes it more challenging and exciting for casual players and first-person shooter fans. For blood and gore enthusiasts, enemies’ limbs, appendages and even heads can be ripped apart if they are hit lethally.
The game is designed with Objective modes where teams work together on accomplishing goals such as stealing magical artifacts and assaulting locations. Other multiplayer game modes included are Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, base control called Capture Points, escort mission called Push and 3v3 tournament called Arena Mode.
Powered by Unreal Engine, the game takes inspiration from Arabian and Persian aesthetics such as vast deserts with sprawling ancient ruins, vibrant market bazaars, lush gardens, dark dungeons and impressive palace architectures. Every location has a story to tell on players. Middle Eastern medieval lore such as Jinn, spirits and alchemy are used for the story’s main plot.
