When you install an OS, sometimes the installer would say something along the lines of “Your architecture does not support this operating system” and would prompt you to install another. This also applies to some games or programs. But what exactly is “OS architecture”?

Announcement in 1999
AMD64 was a processor setting announced in 1999. It was supposed to be a more effective way to produce 64-bit processors, which originally were made by Hewlett-Packard. AMD wanted to make a CPU that would manage the efficiency of the all-new x86_64 instruction set, but make it cheaper and more open to the general public.

It later started production in 2003, and was primarily made for business servers. Power-users, however, could build their own computers with it, and was shipped with the name Opteron.

Intel® follows
In 2005, Intel® made the Pentium® 4, which used an instruction set similar to that of the 64-bit AMD. While AMD started the spring of the 64-bit architecture, Intel® made its river – Pentium® 4 was now marketed as a fast and capable version, and despite how AMD beat Intel® in terms of gaming performance, Intel® beat AMD in MTBF.

“Continuation”

Since then, the 64-bit architecture has been around long enough to be used with different operating systems. Unix-based operating systems such as Linux can use both 64- and 32-bit systems with ease. In the case of Windows®, choosing between the two architectures can be a choice that would require the user to check the processor itself. Today, Windows® 10 only works in x86-64 CPUs, probably to make sure that the system runs in full capacity.

In all, this architecture has been a nobody’s-technology, to the “it” thing of today.
