Choosing an avatar

Games can be small-scale, or large scale. Some games, however, are so big, they deserve their own genre.

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion is the successor of the game Sins of a Solar Empire, made by Ironclad Games and Stardock Entertainment. Even though it was released in 2012, the developers behind the game still continue to develop DLCs until today, with the latest DLC, Minor Factions, being released in December 2018.

The game devs continue to hold tournaments even though the game is almost seven years old.

SoSE was released in the genre RT4X, which stands for Real-Time Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate. Though basically just an RTS, its sheer size makes it a new taste in the tastebuds, and along with it, a different genre altogether.

Loading screen with game tip

Starting it up

Though the game sounds like the daunting type, the interface is simple enough to be used even by a hyperactive teenager with too much coffee. The player can choose the avatar, the faction, the name, and even the faction logo of the empire which they will play.

There is, of course, a loading screen, which gives the player a quick tip. And yes, it can be useful even for a hyperactive teenager.

Although the game tends to be easy at this point, things get complicated soon enough.

More planets to explore

Starting the empire

An empire doesn’t start with a huge army, all the more an empire that spans solar systems. In SoSE, one can expect that a player is only given a small planet, with a single “gravity well.” From here, the player can build their structures, such as those that will be used to build ships.

Although one may expect different decisions at the start, there really isn’t much, with the only big decision being the specialization of the planet (if one wishes to specialize at all).

Starting with the “4X”

As the game progresses, the player will need to expand their empire. Doing so, the player will need ships, explorers, and research. An entire universe is open for the taking, and along with it, a lot of other alien races trying to do the same.

And don’t expect them to like you.

More planets to explore

More planets to explore

Exploration can be tough, sure. But it can be fun, considering that there can be many different types of planets. And not just planets, even. There can be other things such as nebulae, solar storms, space junk, and balls of space stuff that no one even has names for.

It looks like some sort of cloud that messes with the gravity…

An asteroid with a refinery on it

The map gets bigger and bigger

More weird stuff in space

The game moves on, and more planets arrive for the taking. With it, even more aliens, more empires, and some others that will wish to be your allies. Although much of the baddies that you see will want to shoot at you, some will actually be willing to befriend you, whether for kicks or for bucks.

There’s even a black market for minerals

Conclusion

In the end, the game is a huge thing to swallow. Seven years on, and still more DLCs incoming… one may expect a sequel, and yet the developers opt to make it even more diverse and complex. Not in a bad way, of course. The game is getting better as it grows.

Getting things to work properly isn’t too much of a problem in this game. The controls are intuitive. However, the big downside (or big upside?) is the complexity of the game, and how it might not be to everyone’s taste.

Even though I’m not your typical RTS lover, I’d recommend it to any gamer who is not like me.
