Passing through the streets of of the Steam games store, you’ll find a lot of beautiful masterpieces. This game is absolutely one of them. Today I’m writing about Headliner: NoviNews, a game by Unbound Studios.
This game caught my eye because, like me, the protagonist works in the field of media. The game’s premise is simple: You approve or disapprove a story, and your newspaper affects the general public’s opinion.
I had a total playtime of 7 hours (that’s 3 re-runs). I must say, those 7 hours might have been the BIGGEST game changer in my life of employment in PC Buyer’s Guide. With countries all over the world suffering from failing political transparency (and not to mention media bias), this game really opens your eyes to a lot of things.
You play as The Headliner, the chief curator of the NoviNews media outlet in the country of Novistan. Outside of the simple daily grind on your newspaper job, you will also meet with neighbors, family, a possible love affair, and the occasional passersby talking about the news you approved of the day before.
Are you just another desk worker?
Or are you the next hero of your country?
Over time you realize that the news articles that you approve to be shown affect your loved ones. Riots arise. Opinion is swayed, and entire laws are changed forever. War? It’s possible. You have control over what the public sees.
In the end, after your employment ends, you realize the consequences of all that you’ve done. The articles you posted add up to specific events.
Whether you become Novistan’s hero, or villain, is up to you.
To top it off, I really enjoyed it. It feels relevant to the world’s problems today. And not just as media, but also as a desk worker – because in this game, you realize, even just by working at a desk, you can still make a difference.
